The Trinity County Patriots met on Thursday, January 25th at the Martin Senior Center here in Trinity. The event was to host the State of the County Address by County Judge Doug Page and a presentation by candidate Davey Edwards. The public was invited for food and refreshments as well as a meet and greet before the presentations.
There was a good crowd including some candidates for district judgeships and Constable Precincts.
County Judge Doug Page's speech covered the budget, updates and other topics. On the budget Page said the County had gone from over $87,000 in the red when he took office to over a $1.5 million surplus going to education and infrastructure. He is now in his second term. The hospital tax has come up a lot around town and tonight during the question and answer session after the presentation was no exception. Judge Page explained that taxes are still paid due to the fact we are still in the hospital district even though the Trinity hospital is currently closed. He also noted that efforts are still being made to get the Emergency Room re-opened.
Dr. Davey Edwards is a candidate for the Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office (TLGO). He describes himself as a conservative 6th generation Texan qualified in land survey and administration as well as proud of his Texas heritage. He lives with his family in Decatur, Texas and is running against incumbent George P. Bush. Speech topics included a few of his qualifications to hold the office as well as some its history and function. The TLGO generates revenue for the Permanent School Fund which supports general education. It also oversees the maintenance and preservation of historic Texas missions. The most notable of these missions is the Alamo which was a major part of Dr. Edwards's presentation covering his desire to keep it preserved as the shrine it is and bring some of the artifacts back; including those held by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. There was some Texas history question and answer after the presentation was over where the citizens present easily answered some tough questions.
